White or red wine is used in the production of these rustic Italian knots that are covered with sugar. It is a popular habit to immerse these sweets in wine as a delicious conclusion to your dinner, so grab a glass and get ready to indulge.
Ingredients
- 2 c. all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 1/4 tsp. kosher salt
- 1/2 c. dry white wine
- 1/3 c. olive oil
- 1/3 c. plus 1/4 c. sugar, divided
Directions
Step 1
Mix the flour, baking powder, salt, and one-third of a cup of sugar together in a large basin using a whisk. Make a well in the middle of the dry ingredients, pour in the oil and wine, and stir until a shaggy dough forms. After that, use your hands to gently knead the dough until it is smooth and there are no streaks of flour left (do not overmix). Using plastic wrap, cover the bowl and let it to rest for fifteen minutes.
Step 2
Heat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and position racks in the top and bottom thirds of the oven. Parchment paper should be used to line two baking sheets. Put the remaining quarter cup of sugar on a dish of medium size.
Step 3
On a work surface, pinch out a piece of dough equal to one tablespoon and shape it into a rope that is six inches long. After rolling the rope in sugar, bring the ends together to make a ring and gently press them together to attach. Place the ring on a baking sheet that has been prepared. With the remaining dough, repeat the process, placing the rings 1 1/2 inches apart.
Step 4
Twenty-one to twenty-four minutes into the baking process, rotate the sheets and switch places on the racks halfway through. Bake until the bottoms are golden brown and the edges are light golden brown. Wait five minutes for the sheets to cool, and then move them to wire racks to finish cooling fully.
